Bikes parked next to the Koopsmansplein in Assen. There is a similar layer of bikes all around the plein as you can see if you look closely next to the ice cream stall at the far side. Some bikes are parked at stands, but while there are a huge number of stands this still isn't enough for all of Assen's bikes. Luckily most people ride sensible bikes with stands and build in locks which can make the most of spaces without racks. Cycle theft is relatively low here.
Assen has slightly lower than the national average of cycle journeys at "just" 37% (yes, thirty seven percent) of journeys by bike, which apparently translates into 70000 journeys per day by bike in a city with a population of 63000.
