Last week my friend's £1,000 bike was nicked from this post while he was enjoying a meal at the nearby Charlie Chan's restaurant.
The Police recorded the incident but said they were going to take no investigative actions and didn't hold out much sympathy (they receive around 10 theft reports per day).
My friend was mostly annoyed at his own stupidity and realised that railing against the machine was essentially futile. He had used a top quality d-lock to tie it to the vertical post here because the nearby racks and fencing were already massively overfull with bikes. All the thieves had to do to nick the bike was lift it over the top of the post - which you will note has no sign at the top. Perhaps this is a regular place from where bikes are nicked - a trap for the unwary!
Some might call it a 'Cameron Post' - because Conservative party leader David Cameron had locked his bike to a similar post, but in that case the post was only 3 foot high!
This issue has now been resolved, see #15295.
