I'm guessing the red sign is there just in case people unfamiliar with UK traffic regulations wander onto the motorway (left), but the sign is incorrect anyway. It's a shared-use path for both cycles and pedestrians, yet the sign says 'pedal cycles only'. So... where are the pedestrians supposed to go? I think the Council's used the wrong sign.
